About the adventure
Departing from Loreto in a comfortable 4x4 van, the journey begins with a 2-hour transfer across dramatic desert valleys toward the Pacific coast, scanning rocky ridges and open fields for soaring birds of prey such as caracaras, hawks, and vultures riding the morning thermals. Throughout the drive, changing scenery from sierras to coastal plains offers constant wildlife stops and interpretation from two certified bilingual naturalist guides, turning the transfer into the first part of the safari.
Upon reaching the pacific side, we will met a local expert captain and board a comfortable boat for a 4-hour marine safari between towering sand dunes and intricate mangrove channels, where coyotes may patrol the shoreline and leave fresh tracks on the wind-shaped ridges. As the boat glides quietly through the channels, there are frequent chances to observe bottlenose dolphins in small groups and an impressive diversity of birdlife, including great blue heron, reddish and snowy egrets, white ibis, brown and American white pelicans, double-crested and Brandt’s cormorants, ospreys, frigatebirds, caracaras, hawks, vultures, and flocks of sandpipers and other shorebirds on the mudflats.
A key part of the experience is discovering the three mangrove species that frame the lagoon, red, black, and white mangroves, and understanding how they create vital nurseries for fish and invertebrates, shelter and nesting habitat for birds, protection from storms and erosion, and powerful blue-carbon storage that helps stabilize the climate. Throughout the day, the guiding team emphasizes low-impact, regenerative practices and the role of local communities in conserving this mosaic of desert, dunes, mangroves, and lagoon, offering a rare opportunity to experience coyotes, dolphins, and an extraordinary concentration of coastal birds in a single unforgettable adventure with certified guides Regina Domingo and Leopoldo Sanmiguel.
