About the adventure

Rising over 1,600 meters between the Gulf of California and the Pacific Ocean, the Sierra de la Giganta forms the dramatic backbone of southern Baja California Sur. This volcanic mountain range features rugged peaks, deep canyons, and vital water sources that sustain palm oases, wetlands, and a diversity of flora and fauna, including endemic and protected species. The Sierra is essential for the region’s ecology and local communities, providing critical habitats and fresh water in an otherwise arid landscape.

The Sierra de la Giganta is not only a natural wonder but also a cultural treasure, home to historic missions, ancient ranching traditions, and ongoing conservation efforts. Protection of these ecosystems is a collaborative effort involving local communities, researchers, and responsible tourism, focusing on ecosystem monitoring, wildlife corridors, and cultural heritage preservation.

On this guided adventure, you will join certified guides Regina Domingo and Leopoldo Sanmiguel for an immersive journey into the heart of the Sierra. After a scenic transfer from Loreto, the experience begins with a visit to the historic Mission of San Javier, where you will learn about the region’s history and enjoy authentic local cuisine. The journey continues into the canyons, where local rancher and cowboy José Martinez will lead a mule ride through oasis landscapes. Activities include swimming in natural pools, exploring ranch culture and biodiversity, and setting up camera traps to support scientific research on terrestrial mammals.

All monitoring data collected during your adventure is shared with Dr. Aldo A. Guevara-Carrizales of UABC, contributing directly to conservation science and sustainable management of this unique region.
